Step 1: What do I want?
The first thing to do is to ask: What do we want? I want all native fluency (requiring years of work) or not, I just want to have a good understanding of the language, and therefore will not be totally ignorant when it comes to a native? Also, what is your time to learn this material? You have years to work on it, or only a few days or weeks before you go on vacation or to your principalsecond family?
Step 2: Get a Home Study Program
This probably will be the main instrument to teach himself Spanish, and which one you choose is fundamental. I personally recommend the Spanish Synergy, is relatively inexpensive ($ 49), but it is something that only go a bit 'of money to invest, together with the time and effort.
Step 3: Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Translation
I personally use Wordreference.com dictionary and thesaurus;and for my Babelfish translator. A good pocket dictionary is likely to be useful for you, my personal favorite is a small pocket in Merriam-Webster, which focuses on Latin American Spanish (I believe it is the most popular Spanish-English on the Amazon or close to it until it is not difficult to find in any bookstore).
Step 4: Spanish Word of the Day
Something that would be great for your Spanish vocabulary will open a newSpanish word each day. There are several sites out there to give you a new word every day in your RSS reader, via email or on their website each day, as the Spanish-Word-A-Day.
Step 5: Watch Telenovelas! (Spanish language soap opera)
One of the best things you can do to improve your Spanish is to sit for 30-60 minutes every day and watch a Spanish soap operas called soap opera, there will almost always be available, if you have cable or satellite.Personally, I think the best thing to do if you have Tivo or something to activate the subtitles (no Spanish English) and then a character says something like that at any time and find out what they say and then repeat it a couple of to yourself until you have received it and can understand if you've heard again at full speed, then resume and continue to do so. You can only get through 5 minutes worth listening to the show in 30 minutes, but you learn a lot in Spanish.
